These are Illustrator demonstrations based on questions I received from students, so each session covers a variety of topics. We’ve archived them on our vimeo site, no password necessary. June 5, 2013 – Color in Illustrator
Part 1: 2 student questions covered: how to make a button in Illustrator with a reflective gradient look. Also, coloring Scatter Brushes. A discussion of color, starting with the color wheel and applying that to using the color tools in Illustrator within the Swatches Panel (Color Groups), Edit Colors and Recolor Artwork panel.
Part 2: A continuation of the color discussion from the earlier chat starting with using the Color Guide Panel in Illustrator.

March 27, 2013 – Character & Paragraph Styles in Illustrator Plus Assorted Tips
Part 1: Using the Character and Paragraph Styles panels in Illustrator to set a number of type styles in your document that you can update globally. Using Envelope Warp to make a cupcake wrapper template.
Part 2: A demo of the new Astute Graphics plugin, Colliderscribe. Using layers in Illustrator, starting with the basics and following with a discussion about Objects, Group and Layer Appearances, using the Target to identify complex Appearances and apply Layer Appearances.
Dec. 5, 2012 – Mixed Illustrator Tips
Part 1: Setting up a project with layers, guides and a bleed mask. A discussion of scanning ink drawings for tracing with Live Trace or Image Trace in Illustrator.
Part 2: Using the Appearance Panel, Graphic Styles and the Astute Graphics Vector Scribe plugin with “Dynamic Corners” for making a label design with type.
Oct. 24, 2012 – Fun Illustrator Topics + Astute Graphics Plugins
Part 1: Class announcements, restoring Illustrator default settings/preferences, a Mac OSX tip. Start of discussion about plugins from Astute Graphics, Gradient Strokes in CS6. At the very end: how to make a Pattern Brush line offset from the path.
Part 2: Demonstration of the DrawScribe Plugin and it’s 2 tools: InkScribe and Dynamic Sketch tool. FYI: The video is choppy at certain points because of the connection, so it may look like the plugin is working slowly, but on my end it was very quick – it worked just like any other tool in Ai. At the end of class I demonstrate making a quick and easy chevron pattern from my latest YouTube tutorial.
Sept. 19, 2012 – You Illustrator Questions
Part 1: Your questions on: Art Brushes, Flatten Transparency, Expanding Gradients, Layers-Groups-Objects and applying appearances to each. Troubleshooting Ellen’s pattern, part 1 (@ 52:00) – showing how to layer polkadots behind another pattern seamlessly.

June 13, 2012 – Illustrator CS6 Topics
Part 1: Factors in deciding to upgrade to Illustrator CS6. I go through a list of changes from CS5 to CS6. I demonstrate changes/improvements from CS5 Live Trace to CS6 Image Trace. I discuss the new pattern maker function, dealing with overlap issues, turning off isolation mode. Tilde tricks.
Part 2: Live tracing (Image tracing) holiday clip art and making a pattern in CS6. Talking about compatibility between my Essentials classes and the new AiCS6. Working with Gradient strokes in CS6. Overlapping paths in Image Trace.

April 18, 2012 – Style in Illustrator a & Misc. Tips
Part 1: Talking about developing a style, looking for inspiration and reference, copyright. Gathering reference images for a bird design. Looking at the work of Charley Harper. Tracing the bird using the Pen Tool, Blob Brush, Shape Builder Tool in Illustrator. A mention of CS5 width profiles. Starting with Symbols.
Part 2: More about symbols – expanding and using a texture symbol to “cut through” a shape with the Shapebuilder in Illustrator. Expanding a pattern. Making a nest with eggs using the Shapebuilder Tool and strokes with Width Profiles. Talking a bit about Spoonflower printed color samples and Kim Kight’s Meet the Pros chat.
March 14, 2012 – Drawing Demo in Illustrator
Part 1 Part 2 Both chats encompass one long demonstration on Drawing in Illustrator using photo reference as a tracing guide. I’m drawing a fish and some plants to add to the fishbowl illustration assignment from Illustrator 2. I talk about drawing with the Pen Tool, the Blob Brush and the Paintbrush Tool because there are a number of ways to draw curvy organic shapes in Illustrator. Here’s a “trailer” video for the chat on YouTube.
Feb. 15, 2012 – Layers, Layout, Spacing & Blends in Illustrator
Part 1: The new Illustrator forums, layers panel basics review, distributing objects with equal space between them, working with the blend tool to create an ocean wave background.
Part 2: Laying out business cards for printing on a letter sized sheet with crop marks and bleed, a continuation of the wave background from the 2pm chat (using Divide Objects Below), and more about the layers panel.
